Summer Wines

Summer Wines

As the temperature increases, so too does my desire for cold beverages. When ‘ice water’ just isn’t cutting it, I’ll typically turn to an array of light, easy drinking summer-y wines to take the edge off of the heat – or at least make me not care about it as much.

What sets these wines apart from the full gamut of wine available?
Well, these ‘Savour picks for the season’, quite simply, are wines that are meant to be Savoured at much lower temperatures and have a lighter body and lower levels of alcohol and residual sugar than their bolder counterparts.

  • Medium to full bodied whites should be served lightly chilled at 10 – 13 degrees Celsius.
    • Savour buying tip: Ask me for an oaky Chardonnay or a Sauternes
  • Light to medium bodied whites or rosés should be served chilled at 7 – 10 degrees Celsius.
    • Savour buying tip: Ask me for a Chablis, Pinot Grigio or Rosé
  • Sparkling wines should be served well chilled at 6 – 10 degrees Celsius. Dunk them in an ice bath.
    • Savour buying tip: Ask me for a Blanc de Blancs, Prosecco, or Champagne
  • Light bodied reds should be served lightly chilled at 13 degrees Celsius.
    • Savour buying tip: Ask me for a Pinot Noir or a Beaujolais

During the summer heat I tend to stick with the light to medium bodied whites and rosés, sparkling wines and in the evening when the scorch is off, a light bodied red. You can’t go wrong with a Cotes De Provence Rosé – after all, tis the season!

At the right temperatures for service, you are likely to find that wines within these categories can be lively, fresh, and vibrant in aroma, taste and finish.
