Travel and Savour: Cap Ferret

Travel and Savour: Cap Ferret

When I’m not dreaming of: the most magical stretches of pristine beaches or salivating over the amazing seafood (side bar; oysters in particular), or imagining the perfectly curated beach picnics with a glass of perfectly chilled rosé, fresh fruits, sandwiches and my favourite Savour partner; I’m living it – in Cap Ferret.

Cap Ferret will forever hold a special place in my heart for the memories that I’ve created there over the years. It almost directly mirrors my favourite beach spot in Jamaica: Silver Sands, and just happened to be the spot where I was proposed to.

My Savour Experiences in Cap Ferret tend to be at the beginning of the official French summer season. Just before the masses of (other) tourists and locals alike arrive to vacation and catch the summer rays. The, hands- down, best part of Cap Ferret for me is the beach picnic. With no shortage of shoreline on either the seaside or the Bassin d’Arcachon, the location tends to vary. The consistency lies with the apéro style picnic.

So after fine tooth comb precision searching, it would appear that all my beach picnics were eaten before photo evidence was taken… forgive me I’m still getting used to documenting!

Cap Ferret, not to be confused with Cap Ferrat; is an hour drive from Bordeaux (another favourite city!) Once we’ve had our fill of city life, we load up the car (surfboards in tow) and head west to the coast. As I mentioned, the best time to go is middle-to-end of June before the droves of crowds.

While there is no limit to the number of guest houses, airbnbs, hotels and other accommodations for visitors to Cap Ferret, you may encounter a minimum day booking of an entire week versus a long weekend. Going early in the season usually helps you to get away from that – there isn’t quite as much demand yet. One of my favourite hotels in Cap Ferret is Hotel des Dunes (http://www.hoteldesdunes.com/). It’s charming and very well located in proximity to the beach and the bassin.

Once you’re checked in and your beach bag is ready; get rid of the car keys, rent a bicycle and head to the water (bassin or beach). With longer days, 6PM on the beach is still tan worthy!

Exhibit A:

After a day of beach-ing and all that has to offer. Head to Cabane d’Hortense for a seafood filled aperitif!

Crevettes mayonnaise, oysters and a bottle of rosé – where can you go wrong!?

Days like this (cue: Van Morrison) don’t come around all the time so when they do I’m sure to Savour every last minute.

If you ever have the chance to head to Cap Ferret I HIGHLY recommend it. ….‘til then, I encourage you to pack your own picnic this weekend and Savour wherever you can!

Cheers,

Shannon
